RUMM Your Best Energy Management Option

Don’t leave your energy saving measures half finished
By Andrew Diplock, Managing Director, UES Energy
There are numerous actions that can be taken in the quest for Business energy reduction reducing costs and lower carbon emissions. Energy management plays a key role but it’s also important not to overlook the other end of the process – the steps you take before that precious energy even reaches you; that is, the deal you sign up to and the way you manage energy purchasing.
To do this thoroughly and professionally requires a fully integrated energy strategy that includes the energy purchasing cycle.
Unfortunately, this is often overlooked – sometimes because such measures as incorporating energy management products are more tangible, but often because buying energy cost-effectively is complicated.
There are numerous variables, enormous volatility in prices and an endless array of contract options. But while this may be daunting, getting it right can deliver major savings and significant competitive advantages.
The three aspects of buying gas and electricity that make them different from most other products or services you purchase are the timing of the purchase, your company’s appetite for risk and the skills and knowledge needed to get it right.
Timing
Timing is crucial because market prices fluctuate quickly and massively. Some changes are foreseeable, such as seasonal demand, while others, such as unrest in the Middle East, can sometimes be totally unforeseen and could send energy prices soaring in hours.
Consequently, you must clearly understand markets and the forces driving them and constantly monitor them to both take advantage of opportunities as they arise and avoid being caught flat-footed.
Risk
Different businesses have different appetites for risk and this has a profound influence on energy purchasing. Most contracts are either “fixed term” or “flexible”, the latter giving a degree of control over prices and potentially make savings – but at greater risk.
To find a contract with the right level of risk for your business you need to know the options available for Business energy reduction UK.
Skills and knowledge
Finally, if you are responsible for energy procurement you must be familiar with the myriad of different opportunities provided by energy suppliers and negotiate with them to get the best deals.
In all these things, familiarity, experience and industry knowledge are crucial. Energy purchasing has become an increasingly specialist full-time role and an industry of experts has grown up to operate between energy suppliers and business users. Companies like UES Energy constantly monitor market fluctuations and the full spectrum of suppliers’ contracts to help clients find the best options.
Premium airline seating manufacturer Contour Aerospace (now part of Zodiac Aerospace Group), were one company who saw the value in working with energy professionals and following great results from RUMM on their energy management, turned to UES Energy for advice for their energy purchasing.
Finance Director Alison Baker said: “(UES Energy) approach to energy procurement focuses on avoiding unnecessary cost and their advice on the timing of contract placement is backed up with detailed market intelligence. Their quality of service is reassuring and a stark difference to our previous energy broker.”

Brentford Says Final Farewell to Flight Lieutenant Owen Burns – Battle of Britain Veteran
Lodge Bothers funeral directors Surbiton and Funeral Directors Twickenham have had the privilege of conducting hundreds of funerals and memorials for some of Britain’s most loved people. They recently conducted a private funeral service for Flight Lieutenant Owen Burns.
Local resident Flight Lieutenant Owen Valentine Burns, who was an air gunner on Bristol Blenheims during the Battle of Britain – making him one of Churchill’s ‘The Few’ – has died at the age of 99.
Owen was born in Birkenhead on 20th November 1915 but moved to Brentford in 1983 where he joined Deborah, also from Birkenhead, who subsequently became his wife.
Owen, who was just a few months short of his 100th birthday, when he died on 30 June 2015, had volunteered for the RAF on 3 October 1939, joining up as a wireless operator/air gunner.
Owen joined 235 Squadron, a Coastal Command Squadron assigned to Fighter Command to replace losses incurred during the Battle for France and flew with them throughout the Battle of Britain.
On 11th September 1940 he was one of 6 Blenheims escorting 6 Albacores of the Fleet Air Arm to Calais to torpedo the German fleet. On arrival they were greeted by anti-aircraft fire and then attacked by 25+ ME 109s. Fortunately the attack only lasted a few minutes, it is presumed because the Messerschmitts were low on fuel returning from an attack in SE England but only 3 Albacores and 4 Blenheims made it back. (This is an official entry in Lord Dowding’s Diary).
On 14 February 1941 Burns’ Blenheim was caught in an enemy raid while returning from a night patrol over the North Sea. The aircraft crashed on landing as the flare path lighting the airfield had been extinguished. The observer was killed and the pilot spent a year in hospital, but Owen escaped with a broken collar bone – could the date Valetine’s Day be significant?
In January 1945 he was appointed Gunnery Officer for 19 Group, Plymouth and a month later he became PA to Air Officer Commanding Air Vice Marshal CBS Spackman. Owen left the RAF in March 1948.
After the war Owen worked in the North West of England for a whisky company before coming to London after his retirement. He became involved in Battle of Britain activities and as recently as 10 June 2015, Owen and Deborah attended a tea for members of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association hosted by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
He was also recently presented to Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh at the opening of the new visitor centre ‘The Wing’ at the National Memorial to ‘The Few’ in Capel le Ferne, Kent in March.
Owen died peacefully on 30th June 2015 in hospital after a short illness and is survived by his wife Deborah, his 6 daughters and his son.

- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp grated nutmeg

Time for a party? Hire a marquee from Marquee Hire
by theadmin on Jun.19, 2015, under Marquee Hire
Marquee Hire Surrey have very informative blog posts on their site, if you are thinking of hiring a marquee they are definitely the people to contact. Our company was wanting to hire a marquee for a large corporate function and we did not know where to turn. Marquee Hire came highly recommended so we contacted them and they gave us brilliant service from beginning to end.
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT LAYOUT FOR MY MARQUEE?
When considering marquee layouts, and what seating to choose, there is a large amount of choice available; a certain aspect will be dictated by the type of function and whether it is a fully seated, part seating, or standing function.
Whilst we stock a wide variety of furniture, it is key to consider what atmosphere you are trying to create in your marquee, so that the furniture can be used to help add to this.
For fully seated functions we would recommend either 8 guests sat at 5ft round tables or 10 guests sat at 5ft 6″ round tables, allowing a 3x3m space for each table. We also stock 6ft round tables to seat 12 guests, however these are suited for more formal functions, as due to the size it makes it much harder for guests to speak to each other across the table. For top tables, for more traditional events such as weddings, we have long tables (4ft or 6ft long), and oval tables to suit a varying number of guests. Of course, like all of our marquees and events, none of this is set in stone, we can fine tune the furniture and marquee to suit your finer requirements.
For an informal function or part seated buffet using a range of table sizes works very well. It also breaks down the structure to create a more informal atmosphere. 3ft round tables work particularly well. We also have a variety of other seating available for hire including cubed seats, sofas, poseur tables; which can all add to the atmosphere, and create another area in the marquee, please feel free to browse the furniture we have available.
We are always happy to draft table layouts for our clients or to show other corporate events, private parties or weddings we have helped create in marquees, so do feel free to drop us a line if would like some assistance, or just a friendly chat about your event.
Reduce energy the RUMM way!
by theadmin on Jun.16, 2015, under Business, Energy Management
RUMM have an excellent track record that has taken them to greater heights with their Energy Management Services and Systems. RUMM offer a first class world renowned service and are committed to business energy reduction. RUMM take their commitment seriously with expanding to the USA, opening up world class offices. I found this recent case study by which RUMM have assisted Doncaster, Blaenavon achieved excellent results in reducing energy consumption and savings.
The Client
Doncasters is a leading international engineering group. It manufactures precision components and assemblies for the aerospace, industrial gas turbines, specialist automotive fasteners and petrochemical markets. Doncasters excels at working with alloys and metals that are difficult to shape and form.
The Brief
With an energy bill of £1.4million at the Doncasters’ Blaenavon site, RUMM was asked to look at ways of reducing energy consumption thus improving profits. The main focus of this was to design and install an automatic monitoring and targeting system (aM&T) to monitor consumption.
The Method
RUMM installed an aM&T system which provided Doncasters with half hourly data in order to identify those areas where savings could be made.
To ensure everyone was able to understand how the system worked and where the plant was using excess energy, the RUMM team worked closely with the incumbent energy team, in order to identify how electricity and gas were being distributed and the key areas in which they were being used.
The Results
By evaluating opportunities for savings within the thermal efficiency field, and optimising ‘waste heat’ to minimise temperature dissipation, RUMM was able to bring energy consumption down by 27%, giving the Blaenavon plant a saving of £1million over 2 years, against a 40% increase in sales.
This success contributed to Doncasters receiving an Energy Management Award. Such was the success of the work in Blaenavon, Doncasters also asked RUMM to install its energy management solution at four other plants in the UK. Since installation, a total of £3.6million has been saved in energy consumption costs, equating to 11,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Why it worked
Using RUMM’s technology and energy management expertise allowed Doncasters to clearly identify those areas of high energy consumption and focus its efforts in order to set specific objectives that reduced energy consumption. As well as looking at existing manufacturing methods, the company was able to test, prior to installation, proposed new systems to evaluate future energy consumption.
“The service we have had from RUMM has been first class. Such was the project’s initial success, we installed at a further four sites and continue to look at other sites where RUMM’s intelligent monitoring can be used”
Group Energy Manager, Doncasters
Do you need help in reducing energy consumption and therefore save money? Would you like your company to achieve excellent results in Energy Reduction in Manufacturing?
