Stephen
Westland obtained a BSc (Colour Chemistry, 1983) and a PhD (Colour Physics,
1988) from the University of Leeds. He
worked for four years (1986-90) as a colour physicist at Courtaulds Research
before joining Keele University in 1990 to
work with Professor David
Foster. He was a lecturer in Colour Vision from 1994 until 1999 in the
Institute of Communication and Neuroscience where he taught Computational Neuroscience
(first-year Neuroscience), Digital Image Processing (final-year Computer
Science), and Machine Vision (MSc in Machine Perception and
Neurocomputing). In 1999 he was appointed as a Reader in Colour Imaging at the
Colour and Imaging Institute at Derby
University where he became Programme Leader for the MSc Imaging Science
and taught modules on Colour Image Analysis and Colour Vision.
In 2003 he was appointed as Professor in Colour Science and
Technology in the School of Design at the University of Leeds. He is currently Head of the School of Design (2006-2007). His research interests
include colour measurement, colour and spatial vision, spectral
imaging, colour management and colour design.
He is a member of the Colour Measurement Committee (CMC) of the Society of Dyers and Colourists, and a member of the Colour Group (UK). Since April 1996 he has been a director of Colourware Ltd. In 1998 he was invited to join the International Editorial Board of Coloration and Technology and in 2007 was appointed as Academic Editor of a new multi-disciplinary journal Colour: Design and Creativity.
In his spare time he is an obsessive drummer and is currently a member of two local bands: BackIssue and Uncle Fester.
